How it is chosen and made
Impressions, try-ins and follow-up adjustments, with one team in El Poblado
  • First we measure what is there to support it

An X-ray shows the remaining bone and the condition of the teeth still in place: that decides which type of denture is possible.

  • It is tried in before it is finished

The denture goes through try-ins before the definitive version, so shade, shape and bite are corrected while there is still time.

  • Adjustment is followed up

In the first weeks we check and relieve the pressure points. A denture that hurts is not normal: it gets adjusted.

  • In El Poblado, Torre Médica Oviedo

We work inside a medical building with imaging equipment and sterilization on site.

Fixed denture on implants at Clínica Be Dharma in Medellín, Colombia

Dentures and bridges in Medellín

A denture is considered when several teeth are missing and replacing them one by one no longer makes clinical or financial sense. What it aims for: to spread chewing force across the arch, support the facial height lost when teeth go missing and make speaking easier. The final type depends on the X-ray and on what is left to support it. It is usually considered in cases like these:

Fixed, removable or implant-supported

What types of denture exist

The practical difference between one denture and another is whether it comes out or not, and what holds it: the remaining teeth, the gum or implants. That changes how comfortably you chew, the daily care and the cost.

At the consultation we show you which options are possible in your case and what each one asks of you, before anything starts.

  • Fixed bridge: replaces consecutive teeth, supported by the neighboring ones or by implants. It does not come out.
  • Removable partial denture: replaces several teeth and comes out for cleaning.
  • Full denture: replaces a full arch when no teeth are left.
  • Implant-stabilized denture: a full arch anchored to implants, without the movement of a removable one.
If what you need is to replace one or two teeth immediately and temporarily, see also flipper dentures. And if what is missing is the root, dental implants.

How we work on restorative dentistry at Clínica Be Dharma.

How a denture is made, step by step

We assess how much bone is left, the condition of the gums and of the remaining teeth, and take the first impressions.

If there is decay, gum disease or roots that cannot be kept, they are treated first. A denture over an unhealthy mouth does not last.

We record how the arches meet and choose the shape and shade of the teeth, aiming for something that suits your face and your age.

Before it is finished, the denture is tried in to correct bite, esthetics and stability while changes are still possible.

It is delivered and follow-up visits are booked for the days after, to relieve pressure points. Adapting is gradual, above all when speaking and chewing.

The practical difference between one denture and another is whether it comes out, what holds it and how much bone is needed to place it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about dentures

Between impressions, try-ins and laboratory work it usually takes several weeks. If extractions come first, the gum has to heal, and that adds time. A temporary denture can be worn meanwhile.

A well-made removable denture holds, but it is not a fixed tooth: over time the bone changes and it has to be relined or adjusted. If stability is your priority, the option is to anchor it to implants.

In many cases yes, with implants. It depends on the bone available, measured with a CBCT scan. When there is not enough bone, a graft is sometimes possible; other times the realistic answer is to stabilize the removable denture.

The first days speaking and chewing take effort, and pressure points appear that need adjusting. A poorly cleaned removable denture encourages gum inflammation and fungal infection. Bone keeps resorbing under a removable denture, so over the years it has to be relined or replaced. And if there are supporting teeth, they need more care than ever: everything rests on them.

That is the point of the work on shade, shape and tooth position. They are chosen with your face in mind, not the brightest white available.

A removable denture is taken out and brushed daily, and the gum should be given time to rest. A fixed one is cleaned like natural teeth, with particular care where it meets the gum. Either way, regular check-ups.

It depends on the type, the bone and the care. Removable dentures usually need adjustment or replacement over the years because the bone underneath changes. Fixed ones on implants last longer, but also require check-ups.
